Our client, a New York City-based AI and Computational Journalism Company, is seeking a Sr. Backend Engineer to join their growing team! This exciting role is a Direct Hire opportunity. Our client is seeking an individual local to their NYC office so they can work in a hybrid model working in office 3 days per week. This position is not offering sponsorship at this time.
Job Summary: 
As the senior backend engineer, you'll take the reins of the data infrastructure, inheriting this critical responsibility from the CTO. Your goal is to boost the systems' efficiency, scalability, and capacity for innovation. You’ll be expected to prioritize accuracy, speed, and completeness, refusing to compromise on any of these fronts.

You'll become the cornerstone of the company’s computational journalism initiatives, safeguarding and enhancing the content management pipelines at the heart of their editorial-AI infrastructure. Your work will ensure that their platform remains robust and resilient, ready to meet the demands of a rapidly changing information landscape. You'll make sure their infrastructure doesn't just grow but also flexes and adapts, staying ahead in the fast-paced worlds of data and journalism.

  •  Instrumental in architecting, building and maintaining the multi-layered information processing pipelines, including ingestion, enrichment, generation, and management.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to align backend services with the platform's evolving needs, ensuring seamless data flow and integration, as well as internal APIs to support.
  • Interface with Large Language Models (LLMs) and utilize ML frameworks to enhance data processing, taxonomy management, and insight extraction.
  • Help create innovative infrastructure for the management, iteration, and quality control of generative AI content that enables domain expert humans to collaborate with advanced AI models and jump start the generation of domain specific content without sacrificing accuracy or quality.
  • Participate in code reviews, maintain documentation, and provide technical guidance and support to peers with roles including but not limited to data scientists, support engineers, frontend engineers, and content editors.
  • Advocate for best practices in software engineering, including scalability, maintainability, and security within a microservices architecture.
Required Skills and Experience: 
  • 8+ professional years of experience in software development engineering on data-intensive projects that include heaps of structured and unstructured data. Please be prepared to share examples of this.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make informed, strategic decisions.
  • Proven track record of taking existing systems and elevating their performance, demonstrating clear improvements in efficiency and output.
  • Proficiency building cloud-first systems using AWS or GCP-equivalent cloud services, such as ECS/kubernetes, RDS, DynamoDB, lambda, messaging queues, logging/observability solutions and more. Experience with AI services is certainly a plus.
  • Fluent in Python as it relates to data processing, lightweight apis, and its testing frameworks and is a stickler for quality assurance, as well as in-depth knowledge of at least one other modern server-side language.
  • Fluent in SQL with an advanced level of schema design as well as experience with no-SQL and vector databases. Experience with graph databases is a plus.
  • Experience designing low-latency information feeds and internal APIs.
  • Experience packing Docker containers and orchestrating them with services like Kubernetes or AWS ECS
  • CI/CD mindset
  • Understanding of the machine learning lifecycle, generative AI, and exposure to MLOps
  • We’d love to hear from candidates who have experience working with generative AI frameworks.
  • Experience with workflow orchestrators, such as Airflow or Prefect, a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills and a methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, with a keen interest in computational journalism and data-driven technologies.
